“The Mandalorian” has been in news for quite a while Not just because of its stunning visuals and grappling storylines, but also because of the actors. Recently, actress Gina Carano took over the spotlight over her controversial statement. She has been bold about putting out her statements, which have often led to the cancel culture right on her doorstep. Carano has been accused of being transphobic, racist and been involved in some notable online controversies. The question is, will she be returning back for the third season of “The Mandalorian” after Lucasfilms and Disney fired her? Here is what has been happening so far.
About: Gina Carano
For fans of MMA, she is no new news. Gina Carano, born 1982, is a former Muxed Martal Artist. Following her professional defeat to Cyborg, Carano retired from the ring and turned her attention to the screen. Her first major role was in the 2011 action film Haywire, where she played the lead role. This was followed by her performances in 2013’s “Fast & Furious 6” and 2016’s “Deadpool”. In 2019, she was cast as Cara Dune for the Dinsey+ Lucasfilms series “The Mandalorian”. However, after some controversial statements on her social media, she was fired from the future seasons of “The Mandalorian”.
The Controversy and #FreeGinaCarano
She has never been shy about expressing her views in the public. The stream of controversy started when people asked her to show support for Black lives Matter and she refused to do so. According to her, many who were called others racist despite not being so were “cowards and bullies”. The controversy went further when after many celebrities were putting up their pronouns in their bios, she put up three words in her bio- “beep/bop/boop”. This led to a very big backlash for her and she soon explained her point of view after talking to co-star Pedro Pascal.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Carano was one of the people who questioned the COVID-19 mask and the preventive measures that ought to be taken by the government as well as voter fraud. Most recently, she shared a post about the condition of Jews in Nazi Germany and compared it to the divided political climate of America. All of this cumulated in the recent tags of #FreeGinaCarano, urging Disney to fire the actress.
The deed came to be done after her most recent post, where Lucasfilms declared that they had indeed fired the actress and that they had no plans for her to return to “The Mandalorian”.
Popular reaction and Carano’s future
It is easier to say that the people’s reaction is quite mixed when it comes to Carano’s firing. While some believe that she was justly fired, others are against the actions taken by the company. In a most recent poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies and released by The Daily Wire, which has been known as the conservative media company, more than 60% of Americans believed that Gina was unjustly fired from “The Mandalorian”. Those who opposed Disney’s decision were also anti-Disney. The polls and reaction bring forth quite a confusing view of the public reaction.
The million-dollar question is whether or not Carano would be returning for the third season. In short, the answer according to present circumstances is no. While many do believe that Disney has been trying to be politically correct and that Carano represented a female character many identified with, the companies have been firm in their decision.
Meanwhile, Carano has made deal with The Daily Wire, who was responsible for the survey, to produce and star in the upcoming film. The actress has remarked that after her firing, she has received more time than ever.
