Based on Walter Tevis’ novel, “The Queen’s Gambit” had a massive success post its release on Netflix. The series was both critically and commercially acclaimed. The portrayal of Beth Harmon by Anya Taylor-Joy was appreciated and acclaimed. Set in the 1950s and 60s, the show tackles the problems of a female in yet another male-centered world and talks of topics such as drugs, addiction, and racial inequality. Both the actress and the series won Golden Globed for their magnificent performance.
Now, Variety has reported that post the massive success of the series, Level Forward, a film, television and theatre production company has gained rights to adapt the storyline on the stage. The company has previously co-produced shows on Broadway like “Jagged Little Pill”, “Slave Play” and “Oklahoma!” The former two productions are currently in the nomination for Tony Awards.

The acquisition of rights for this story took place on 8th March 2021, Monday. “The Queen’s Gambit: The Musical” is still in the early stages of its production. No other detail except the transfer of rights has been available to the masses. We can easily give it a year or two before the fans of the stage will be able to see the musical adaption.
Crew and Development: The Queen’s Gambit
The right to turn this famous book and now equally famous limited series into a musical has been taken by the production company Level Forward. The CEO of the company, Adrienne Becker, and the producer Julia Duntez have expressed their delight and privilege in being able to get the rights for the story. Abigail Disney, Walt Disney’s grandniece, is one of the founders of this company. It was she who along with her fellow workers announced that they had won the rights of this 1983 novel and plan on bringing the story to stage.
The company has not released the details about the creative team or any of the members on board with the project. Fans will have to wait for the details about the actual production.
While it may look like an unusual material for a musical, in the 1980s “Chess”, another musical with the central theme of a chess tournament between an American and a Soviet Grandmaster has already been released. The show was well acclaimed, and its score was very well-received. Though the show did not return to Broadway after its two months run, following the series success it is not far-fetched to assume that “The Queen’s Gambit: The Musical” will do well on stage.

“The Queen’s Gambit” is about an orphan, Elizabeth Harmon, who is a chess prodigy. Early in her life, Elizabeth or Beth got orphaned and had to be sent to live in an orphanage. Set in the 1950s, when girls in the orphanage were given tranquilizer pills, Beth slowly gets addicted to the pills which enhanced her visual skills. these further helped in building her chess skills. Over the course of years, Beth deals with the rising fame of being a world-famous chess player, the financial help that comes due to her career along with her drug and alcohol problem.
