Takumi Yanai’s dream novel series Gate is written by Takumi Yanai and illustrated by Daisuke Izuka and Kurojishi. It was serialized on the client-created novel distribution platform Arcadia from 2006 to 2009 before it was acquired by publisher AlphaPolis in 2010. In July 2011, Satoru Sao began a manga transition, and three side project manga began in 2015. The first half of an anime TV series was broadcast between July and September 2015, and the second half was broadcast between January and March 2016. Sentai Filmworks has licensed the series in North America. In 2017, Gate Season 2: Weigh Anchor, a sequel novel series, was published.
Looking back at previous seasons, the next installment premiered on January 9, 2016, and the season finale aired on March 26, 2016. Given the fact that no official announcement for Season 3 has been made, fans are optimistic that the season will air because the show’s producers have plenty of time to reestablish Gate. We may expect the third season to premiere in 2021, based on speculation. Before we expect something important, we should wait for the authority declaration.
The show is a combination of reality and fantasy. A portal from another dimension opened up one day in modern-day Tokyo, and through it, warriors and beasts arrived in Japan, launching a full-scale assault on Earth. On the other hand, Japan believes it is difficult to stop intruders who quickly transform Ginza into a flashpoint. Following that, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces decide to counterattack and drive the intruders back to their starting point. After finally pushing the intruders out, the JSDF takes advantage of the opportunity to set up a forward working base (FOB) on the opposite side of the Gate, where they can prepare and bargain with the intruders.
The show revolves around Youji Itami, a 33-year-old man who is chosen to be a member of the JSDF team as an extraordinary observation group to the opposite side known as the Special Area. Despite battling and going through a few assaults while investigating the Special Area, Youji and his party begin to magnanimously support local citizens, including Princess Pia Co Lada, against an ancient and ruthless mythical beast and a band of raiders. Youji and his party, as well as the Japanese forces, quickly gain the confidence of the locals.
First and foremost, things started to go in the direction that Youji needed. Nonetheless, things took a turn for the worse when he managed to ruin Crown Prince Zorzal. Crown Prince, feeling betrayed and humiliated, takes it literally and organizes a gathering against him. He takes over command of the Special Region’s militaries and decides to exact vengeance on Japan. He murders locals by deceiving his soldiers into disguising themselves as locals and wreaking havoc on them in order to incite them to declare war on Japan.
Even so, the Japanese power is unfazed and plans a rescue mission to free Princess Pia Co Lada, Emperor Molt Sol Augustus, and Imperial Capital war representatives. The never-ending problem for Japanese forces is how to deal with Prince Zorzal and the Gate, which is the connection between two parallel universes.
