In her triumphant return to the Cannes red carpet, Helen Mirren walks to the Cannes Film Festival
In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, Helen Mirren made her spectacular return to the Cannes red carpet on the opening night of the festival. She had isolated herself at home with her husband, director Taylor Hackford, for months. As part of her daily routine, the Oscar winner, 75, kept up a beauty routine to pass the time and remain normal during the lockdown.

“I wear makeup every day,” she says. My husband does not care whether my face is covered in makeup, as he never notices. He asks me if I have makeup on or not and is not particularly concerned, but he definitely is not aware.” Sometimes, he’ll say, “Oh, you look nice,” in a very puzzling way. I just think you just associate my appearance with having spent an hour on my makeup, but in reality, I would put on makeup and put on clothes every day just because I like to do it.” In fact, it was a positive experience for Mirren because she felt like she was living her life to the fullest.
Mirren describes stepping back into the spotlight after a few months out as “extraordinary” after being out of it for months. After spending a year and a half in this environment, I’d forgotten how it felt. It was a little frightening, but I had so much fun.”
Cannes’s 2021 Film Festival runs through July 17.
Having walked the carpet on la Croisette several times, Mirren says, “I really like it.”. Dressing up in incredibly beautiful clothes is one of my favorite things to do. As a couture enthusiast, I appreciate the craft. Dressing up is my favorite part of being a girl. I’m totally fine giving everything away at the end of the night and getting back into my scruffy, bohemian clothes.”
The actress who first became an ambassador for L’Oréal at 69 was thrilled to be back on Cannes’ red carpet, which she first walked in 1998. First attending the festival in 1973 for the film O Lucky Man, F9 star made her debut there.
