After the release of season 1 of the series, fans were very much curious to welcome season 2 of the anime series. It has been way long since the Cowboy Bebop anime arrived, it’s now officially confirmed that Cowboy Bebop Season 2 is not going to get renewed. Let us take a look at this article to find out what might be the reason behind the renewal of season 2 of the anime series.
What’s the Cowboy Bebop anime series all about?
Cowboy Bebop is a Japanese science-fiction anime television series created and animated by Sunrise, and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. The series was dubbed into English by Animaze ZRO Limit Productions.
The anime series is set in the year 2071 after a massive event that resulted in the Earth being completely inhabitable. The series follows the story of a traveling bounty hunting crew members Spike, Jet, Faye, Edward, and Ein who are set up on a legal contract system in which the bounty hunters chase criminals and bring them alive in return for a reward. Therefore the bounty hunters are working from the spaceship Bebop due to work against limiting crime rates.
The anime series has been called one of the greatest series of all time. The anime was a great success in the Japanese and international markets. The anime has gained several major awards upon its release and also received numerous praise from its fans and critics.
Was Cowboy Bebop Season 2 canceled or renewed?
Well, as per sources Cowboy Bebop Season 2 was never canceled nor even renewed, the anime series was released way back in 1998 and since then the anime was not renewed for another season even being the biggest anime series of all time.
Even being the most successful anime series of all time, the anime series never had a follow-up season which has left fans with a question of why the series was never renewed after its original release in 1998.
Since the series was so popular among fans at that time and this series as we know maintained a greater position among fans from 1998 till now, it is on the other hand very sad news that the makers did not consider renewing the series once again for its fans.
Why was it never renewed?
The major reason behind why the series was never renewed for another season was that the series director Shinichirō Watanabe who himself was the major reason behind this believed that the conciseness of the anime would keep the spirit of the show. He thought that since the series should be concise and 26 episodes are enough to tell a masterpiece story like this, became the reason why Cowboy Bebop Season 2 never got renewed.
Also, the director believed that the story should be crisp and short, and since he created a storyline with a clear beginning, middle, and end the anime was never planned to go beyond the 26 episodes.
Apart from that Netflix also planned to bring the storyline of the anime series into live-action television series that would be streamed on their platform following the same storyline, but somehow after the series season 1 which aired on November 19, 2021, the series was also canceled due to its decreasing viewership rates. And sadly the live-action television series failed to impress fans which made Netflix cancel the show just weeks after its season 1.
Cowboy Bebop Season 1 Recap
Well, since the anime series was never renewed, let us take a quick recap of what happened in the Season 1 of the anime.
Since we know the series does not have an overarching storyline, the majority of the episodes are episodic, featuring the crew on their off bounties or missions. We saw in season 1 that there is a bounty on a sinister old man in an eight-year-old body. Season 1 also showcased the crew fighting a terrorist who uses teddy bears as explosives.
And in one of the most adored episodes, Spike heads to the Spaceland amusement park to face off with the unkillable assassin, Pierrot whose genetic alterations have transformed his mind into that of a child.
We also saw that before joining the Bebop crew, Spike was a member of the Red Dragon syndicate who falls in love with Vicious’s (Spike’s enemy) girlfriend Julia who is later on killed by Vicious, therefore at the end, we saw that Spike returns to Bebop after one last time to say goodbye to Jet and Faye and therefore kills Vicious and the series ends up with Spike collapsing to the ground seemingly dead, while his fate remains a mystery.
