Cruel Summer on Freeform was a bit of a surprise success. Many casual viewers tuned in to the premiere to see what it was about before becoming hooked. By the time the first season, which had only ten episodes, was over, the fan community was rife with many hypotheses, viewpoints, predictions, and compliments for the program. Of course, when the series ended—with a jaw-dropping climax, to add salt to injury—and Freeform stayed silent, they were left with only questions. But soon rumors of Cruel Summer Season 2 began to circulate. However, as of the autumn 2022 television schedule, that second season has not yet been released. Furthermore, the second season will follow the Freeform model of an anthology series with all-new characters.
Viewers have clamored for every conceivable idea and interpretation of Cruel Summer since the time the program premiered. Thus, it goes without saying that people went to Reddit to dissect the story and support one another’s theories.
Some fans believed they understood the plot, but they may have to wait a very long time for clarification. And that drives the show’s recent binge-watchers, who are new fans, crazy. Even though they had quite different motivations, other Redditors were also dissatisfied with the direction the show was taking.
Fans of the show appear to be accepting of the ending-that-wasn’t-an-ending now that they have had time to think about it, but they aren’t ready to bid their favorite characters farewell just yet. Despite the fact that some of them deserve punishment and others deserve retribution.
Cruel Summer Season 1 Ending Explained
Many fans were taken aback by the show’s actual first-season finale, although others felt that it neatly wrapped up the story. While many Redditors appear to have found closure for the characters, it wasn’t necessarily the case.
One remarked about the “they disagree with, “The story is over,” as a cliffhanger. Their next three years of life don’t need to be seen by us.”
A second concurred the way they concluded the story is actually pretty good. Each character’s arc seemed to have reached a conclusion in season one, in my opinion.
In-the-know commenter Freeform and the show were both defended by pointing out that “Initially a limited series, Cruel Summer. Never having a second season was never intended.”
They pointed out that the fact that the show was one of Freeform’s most popular ever drove them to look for a means to make a second season. All of season 1’s plot was revealed in the conclusion you witnessed.
Even though recent season one viewers aren’t very enthusiastic about it, that is a great point. Additionally, some claim that Jessica Biel won’t return to produce, despite the fact that Cruel Summer is being handled by her production firm in collaboration with Michelle Purple.
When is Cruel Summer Season 2 returning?
Freeform had not yet disclosed the release date for Cruel Summer Season 2. In fact, it has been promising a second season since June 2021.
But if the Redditor who claimed Freeform didn’t anticipate Cruel Summer to be a hit is accurate, there may be a reason why the show hasn’t gained much traction.
After all, a completely new cast needed to be assembled, and any side projects the crew was working on (Jessica Biel, for example, was voicing a Scooby Doo character and contributing to the movie Candy) needed to be taken into consideration.
Prior to Cruel Summer, Olivia Holt, who played a key role in season one, had a full acting resume. In addition, she had a Halloween horror movie scheduled.
Is the old cast returning?
Is the original cast of Cruel Summer ever going to make a comeback? is the second unanswered issue regarding the film. It’s difficult to say, though, given that Freeform has been completely mute except for announcing Cruel Summer Season 2 itself.
Furthermore, the network almost seems to enjoy teasing fans; a September Instagram update sparked a tonne of speculative fan comments, but none of these were answered.
So no, there hasn’t been any information released on how (or if) the season one cast will return. But until they do, the initial followers who flocked to Reddit with their first-season conspiracy theories won’t be satisfied.
