An Exclusive Interview With Emily Ashton, An American Singer & Songwriter

1.) Tell us about your background getting to where you are today? What’s your stage name?

My name is Emily Ashton, I’m an American singer / songwriter. I’ve been making music for the last five years, but released my first E.P. ‘The Archives’ in 2023 with DK Records. ‘The Archives’ featured singles “Blue” and “As it Seems.”

2.) Where are you from?

I’m from a small town outside of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

3.) When did you start music?

In 2019 when I was 16, I was still in high school and only ever uploaded short anonymous clips of me singing covers online or new ukulele chord progressions.

4.) How did you get into music?

It all started with a ukulele a family member gifted me when I was 14. Ever since then the sound of the ukulele strum soothes my soul and I could play it forever and never get tired of hearing something new.

5.) What is the most challenging thing you have overcome in your life?

Definitely coping with a BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) diagnosis. Before I was clinically diagnosed I thought I could carry on with life like everyone else and push my emotions aside. But with time I would have more breakdowns resulting in psychiatric inpatient programs. After intensive therapy, I began to use music as a coping mechanism and outlet for my intense emotions.

6.) Are you currently signed or independent?

Right now I am signed with DK Records. But I am always on the lookout for new opportunities for growth and wouldn’t reject a major record label if they approached me to sign with them.

7.) Who inspires you the most musically?

I like to be as original as I can, and create new sounds with deeply emotional lyrics without following what’s currently popular. Kye Kye has a really gorgeous sound and I’ve been drawing some inspiration from their song “Glass” for a single on my upcoming debut album.

8.) What do you want people to take away after listening to your music?

I want people to realize they aren’t alone and that what they are feeling is real. I want people to know that it’s okay to cry and play a song 100 times, or that it’s okay to have good and bad days. That what they are feeling can be relinquished through screaming the lyrics of a similar song, at least temporarily.

9.) Any new music coming out soon?

I am currently working on my upcoming debut album titled ‘Silence Between Scenes’ I can’t say very much right now because we are still in the early stages of the album. But there is a set track-list consisting of 20 songs.

9.) Any new music coming out soon?

I am currently working on my upcoming debut album titled ‘Silence Between Scenes’ I can’t say very much right now because we are still in the early stages of the album. But there is a set track-list consisting of 20 songs. The leading singles will be “Doused”, “The Alchemist”, and “Kyoto”

10.) What is your greatest achievement as a musician?

I’m very proud of the shows I’ve preformed and really hope to have a lot more live performance in 2024.

11.) Do you produce your own music? If not, who do you work with?

I produce and write all of my music.

12.) Who is one artist you wish you could work with?

I would definitely be honored to work with Bones, all of his music has a distinct sound that I will never stop listening to.

13.) What does a day inside your shoes look like?

I usually wake up early, while it’s still dark to allow myself a head start for the day. I’m driving an hour every morning usually to see family and catch up if I’m home. When I’m traveling or on the road anything goes, any routine that I typically do at home is usually abandoned for the time being and I just make it through the day. I love not knowing what will happen next though.

14.) Anything else you want the audience to know about you?

The new album ‘Silence Between Scenes’ will be released in late 2024. Leading singles “Kyoto”, “Doused”, and “The Alchemist” will be released in the spring and summer of 2024. In addition to the debut album, another E.P. may be released with songs that didn’t make the track-list cut.

15.) How can our audience connect with you? Please share your social media handlers.
