JDIFF 2026 Selection Source Explores the Fragile Power of Alaska’s Last Wild Salmon Sanctuary
At the 2026 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival, filmmaker Nick Lee presents Source, a documentary that takes audiences deep into Bristol Bay, Alaska, one of the last untouched ecosystems where wild salmon continue to thrive.
Told through the perspective of a commercial fishing skipper, the film offers an immersive look at the delicate balance that sustains this environment, revealing both its beauty and the growing threats it faces. Through sweeping visuals and firsthand accounts, Source highlights a region that remains largely free from the industrial pressures that have devastated similar ecosystems around the world.

The idea for the film began with Lee’s early fascination with Alaska and its larger-than-life landscapes, a curiosity that deepened once he experienced Bristol Bay firsthand. “I wanted to introduce Bristol Bay to folks that are not familiar with it,” Lee says.
At its core, the documentary centers on a simple but often overlooked principle. Preservation does not always require intervention. In the case of Bristol Bay, its strength lies in what has not been altered. “Sometimes when it comes to preserving wild salmon, you just need to do nothing,” Lee says.
Production unfolded across remote and unpredictable terrain, with much of the footage captured in the wild conditions of Alaska. The process required flexibility, as the crew adapted to both the environment and the rhythms of the natural world they were documenting. The result is a film that feels immediate and deeply connected to its subject.
While the story is rooted in Alaska, its implications extend far beyond a single region. As global salmon populations decline due to human development, Bristol Bay stands as one of the last remaining strongholds, making its preservation a matter of broader ecological and cultural significance.

With its selection at JDIFF, Source brings an Alaskan story to a Midwestern audience, offering a perspective that connects environmental stewardship with everyday life. It invites viewers to consider not only where their food comes from, but what is required to sustain it.
In capturing both the scale and fragility of Bristol Bay, Source delivers a clear message. Some of the most powerful choices we can make are the ones that leave things exactly as they are.
