Get Ready to Sob as Billie Eilish Debuts Her New Song “What Was I Made For” on the Barbie Soundtrack

Eilish announced the song on Instagram on Thursday (July 6), writing in the caption, “We made this song for Barbie and it means the absolute world to me. This movie is gonna change your lives and hopefully the song will too. Get ready to sob.”

On the forthcoming song, “What Was I Made For,” which will be released on July 13, Eilish’s go-to collaborator, her Grammy-winning elder brother FINNEAS, also contributes.

The Barbie soundtrack is expected to include songs by some of modern pop’s greatest and brightest singers, including Lizzo, Fifty Fifty, Kali, Gayle, Khalid, Haim, and Ava Max. The soundtrack is executive produced by Academy Award-winning composer and producer Mark Ronson. Numerous tracks from the soundtrack have already been made available, including two that have charted on the Billboard Hot 100: Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and AQUA’s “Barbie World” (No. 7) and Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” (No. 31).

Eilish has just released her second single of the year, “What Was I Made For.” The singer of “Bad Guy” posted her 2018 rendition of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” to all streaming services in May. Eilish’s debut into cinema is continued with the new Barbie song. “No Time to Die,” the Oscar-winning theme song for the James Bond film of the same name, was released by her in 2020. She and her brother wrote three original songs for the Turning Red soundtrack two years later, including “Nobody Like U,” which reached its top position of No. 49 on the Hot 100.
